Diet

Feeding your cat an appropriate diet is critical to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Many cats with various diseases such as chronic cystitis, renal failure, obesity, and diabetes, really benefit from diets designed to control and manage their illnesses. To start, we are going to focus on the Hills Prescription Diets, those we carry and those that you can special order through us. We also carry the IVD/Royal Canin and Purina diets.

A wonderful benefit of offering different lines of cat food is the variety. Cats are picky eaters, and for cats with diseases such as chronic renal failure and cystitis, it is important to carry an array of foods that will help manage these conditions to keep your cat interested.

City Cats carries several different types of feline diets, including Hills Prescription Diet. Our team can help you determine the best product for your cat's needs.

Hills' Prescription Diets
a/d This food is intended to help cats recover from diseases or surgery. It is an extremely palatable diet that most cats love and encourages them to eat on their own. What makes it great for recovery is that it rebuilds muscle mass and promotes tissue healing throughout the body. It also stimulates the immune system. a/d is only intended to be used short term, so it is not a maintenance diet.
c/d This food is intended to help control the development of struvite crystals and to manage Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease. The diet works by maintaining a normal acidic pH of the urine to prevent struvite crystal formation. Lower levels of magnesium also assist in this process. The canned c/d also helps with chronic cystitis. It has a higher amount of moisture to increase daily water intake. This in turn increases urine volume and causes the urine to be more dilute. For kitties with chronic cystitis, FLUTD, or struvite crystals, c/d is a great choice and is a maintenance diet.
d/d This diet is for kitties with adverse reactions to food. It works because it contains a single protein and a single carbohydrate source (lamb and rice) that usually do not cause food allergies in cats. d/d is also great for cats that suffer from gastroenteritis or inflammatory bowel disease; it is easy on a sensitive stomach. This diet only comes canned and can be a long term maintenance diet.
g/d This food is a geriatric diet meant for older kitties with heart disease, heart failure, and renal failure. It has reduced levels of phosphorus to prevent the onset of kidney disease, and it has reduced sodium to prevent the buildup of fluids in the body. Taurine is added to this diet to help the heart function efficiently. g/d can be fed as a long term diet, it comes in both canned and dry, and it must be special ordered through City Cats.
i/d This diet is intended for cats with acute or chronic gastroenteritis, pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, and constipation. Kitties that constantly have diarrhea or vomiting also respond well to this food; It is highly digestible and helps replenish nutrients lost with vomiting and diarrhea. i/d is sold in both wet and dry varieties.
k/d This is one of the most popular diets sold at City Cats that manages chronic renal failure in cats. It has reduced phosphorus levels, reduced sodium levels, and helps control the amount of urine loss as a result of kidney disease. It also reduces the workload of the kidneys. This can be fed as a long term diet and comes canned and dry.
l/d This cat food helps control liver diseases like hepatic lipidosis and hepatic encephalopathy. It is high in antioxidants and quality protein to ease the workload of the liver. This diet comes canned and dry and must be special ordered through City Cats.
m/d This diet manages obesity and diabetes mellitus in cats. For weight loss, this diet has a low level of carbohydrates, high protein levels, high carnitine levels to burn calories, and high fiber content to reduce fat and build up muscle mass. For diabetes, it helps to control insulin activity and glucose levels. We sell both wet and dry m/d.
p/d This diet is ideally fed to kittens to promote healthy growth and development. Kittens have special needs as they mature, and p/d includes the protein, calories, and fat they need to fully develop. This diet is also great for cats recovering from surgery or disease. It comes dry and canned and can be fed as a maintenance kitten diet. Once a kitten becomes mature, it should switch to an adult diet.
r/d For cats struggling with obesity, this is the perfect diet to try. r/d is not intended to be a long term diet; usually it's used for about 3 months to shave off weight and then a maintenance diet is chosen. It is a low calorie, high fiber food with extremely high levels of carnitine to burn fat and increase muscle mass. r/d also manages struvite crystal formation in obese cats. This diet comes both canned and dry.
s/d This diet is great for dissolving struvite crystals by creating a more acidic urinary pH and by having lower levels of magnesium. This is not recommended for a long term maintenance diet because of the increased acidity, so it is best to feed s/d to dissolve the crystals and then switch over to a preventative diet like c/d. This diet controls Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease and comes both canned and dry. It is high in calories.
t/d Our top seller at City Cats because of our special interest in dentistry and prevention of dental disease, this diet is great for reducing the amount of tartar, plaque, and staining on the teeth. The kibbles are larger than most feline diets, forcing the cats to really bite down and nourish the teeth and gums. t/d reduces gingivitis and scrubs away at the surface of the teeth. It only comes as a dry kibble, but it is extremely palatable and not many cats will refuse to eat it! This is a great maintenance diet and it is low calorie!
w/d This diet is also a popular one at City Cats and is a great maintenance diet. It is extremely rich in fiber which helps cats battle obesity, colitis, diabetes, constipation, and diarrhea. It's also a great low calorie food and has high levels of carnitine to burn fat and build muscle mass. w/d comes both canned and dry.
x/d

This diet is specifically for kitties with calcium oxalate crystals. It manages FLUTD, and with added potassium, it creates a more alkaline urinary pH which inhibits the formation of calcium oxalate crystals. This diet also has a reduced level of sodium. Cats can be on this diet long term, and it comes both canned and dry.

z/d Designed for cats with food allergies, the proteins in this food are hydrolyzed and can escape through the animal's system undetected, preventing any adverse reactions to the diet. There is also only a single carbohydrate source, rice, minimizing the chance of a food allergy. There are omega-3 fatty acids which help reduce any inflammation in the intestinal tract. This diet is great for kitties with skin allergies, gastroenteritis, colitis, and inflammatory bowel disease, and it only comes dry.
