Inappropriate elimination outside the litterbox is a problem
in cats that is more common that was once believed. The following
tips can prevent problems or solve current ones:
Placement of the litter box is very important.
One litterbox per cat, plus an extra one, should be placed
in well-ventilated areas that provide easy access to the
box.
Cleanliness is a must. If using traditional
litter, the box should be emptied completely and washed
every 2-3 days. When scooping stools from the box daily,
do not stir the litter. Stirring will mix the urine smell
throughout the box. Scoopable litters can be touched up,
and cleaned out as needed.
The style of the box is also important.
Be careful when using covered litterboxes; they trap the
odor in the box, which is a deterrent for the cat.
Improper etiquette around the box can
lead to problems. If you have more than one cat, do not
let them scare or bother each other around the litterbox.
Kittens need special attention while litter training.
Confine them where the litterbox is close by until they
learn where it is. A kitten's memory is not fully developed
until 4-5 months of age.
Everclean, a litter with a sand-like consistency, has had
excellent results. Cats are attracted to the texture, which
is similar to an outside sandbox. Everclean also turns urine
into a hard clump that can easily be scooped out.
